What?

So I was sort of absentmindedly poking around my hard drive, and I came across a folder called 'notes.' Inside was one untitled text file. This is what it said:

"architecture competition

jim milloy  mini golf hole

create play learn work

object to be destroyed - pamela m lee

conflux"

I have no idea, but the bf and I found it hilarious. Maybe you had to be there/us.

(and in case the potential destruction of pamela worried you...)

Art School! (Very Bad Pictures of Very Rouch Sketches)

I went to my first ever studio classes this week. Two of them. One Drawing, one Painting, though we just drew in that one this week, too.

Few reasons for this new venture. I've always thought the whole notion of writing about art—critically, academically, or whimsically—without any experience of doing it, or without any experience of what artists get taught, has got to leave you with a relatively limited frame of reference. Also, I like drawing and, hopefully, painting (will find out next week.) I didn't realise this until a couple of years ago, and I've certainly never developed a habit out of it, but whenever I do get around to hauling out a sketchbook (I'd say once or twice a year) I've really liked the process and have generally end up comically infatuated with what I've created. Not that it's 'good work' in a professional artist sense, but I'm pretty fascinated with how your hands can make something out of nothing.  I guess that's just two reasons. More than enough.

These are some very badly lit iPhone shots of my first drawrings. I think they're pretty cute, if nothing else. Chalk it up to comic infatuation.

Obviously terrible, but the instructor said it had 'personality' and that it reminded her of Philip Guston.
She's a nice lady. I'll take it.

Sorry I Haven't Posted (Cory Archangel Are You Paying Attention)

Referring to this 'art project' but looks like he lost interest in it a while ago. Oh well. You never know, though... ? Anyhow. Yes, I took a blogging hiatus while back in Victoria for Christmas. I actually didn't bring my camera's battery charger back with me, accidentally, of course, but it was surprisingly refreshing to be without my oh so demanding digital apparatus (appendage, even) for three whole weeks. Once I pull it out of my bag I can be agonisingly obsessive about it, so I often just don't touch it when I'm out, or leave it behind for the day/night... that was the longest separation since I've had it, though, I think. But I'm ok.

THE POINT is I'm obviously never going to catch up with things in any kind of linear event-related fashion, so here's a somewhat random selection of pictures from the last two or three weeks before Christmas. I think they are either totally gratuitously aesthetic and/or fairly self explanatory, but, um ask me about anything you want to know about? The good news is my wonderful and extremely lovely little sister came to visit me during that time and her Christmas in NY posts are far more coherent!
